Pregnancy makes it a lot harder to get things done, but nesting is just the best. I have been working non-stop on my son's room so I can finally get started on the nursery. My back is killing me, I have cuts and bruises everywhere, and I'm completely drained of the small amount of energy that I did have, but I got this project done all by my pregnant self in two dang days--while my toddler was right under me the entire time. Now that is a miracle. If you follow my blog, you may have noticed that I have a serious problem finishing things I start, or just that it takes me entirely too long to get it done. Well, I painted his walls and got everything situated and I am feeling quite accomplished.
His room was a big huge mess before I got started so please excuse these pictures. I kicked everything off by giving his dresser a fresh coat of white paint. I don't have a "before" picture of that, but just know that it was completely covered with dirty hand print smudges, crayon scribbles, and scratched paint. I cleaned it up with my magic eraser and brushed some new paint on and it is looking good as new (besides missing a handle on one of the cabinet doors). Some cute new nautical hardware will spruce this little piece right up.
The first day of painting, I woke up and decided it was the day. I was running out of time. I got my paint brushes and rollers, moved the dresser out of the way to start with the easiest wall (aka the shorter wall with two doors). This wall took no time at all since there wasn't much wall to paint anyways, but it gave me the motivation to keep going and the sense of accomplishment that I was actually getting stuff done that I said I would do. I was so excited, I couldn't even wait for the paint to dry before I put the dresser back and snapped some pics to show off.
I took the curtains down and moved the furniture away from the second wall and got started painting again. This wall took a little longer. Mostly because I took a few breaks to rest my aching back and hands, but also to admire my work. I still couldn't believe how much I was getting done! I called it quits for the day after I finished this wall because my husband was off work and I was ready to lay down and relax. By this time, I had been working in this room for about 5 hours. Not to mention, I threw-up my breakfast that morning (which is totally random because I have never puked during pregnancy) so I was super hungry and ready to eat something. After I got some food in me, I cleaned up the old chest we had sitting in the living room and had my husband carry it upstairs for me to be used as a toy box. I went through his toys, picked out a select few that he plays with daily and the rest is in a box ready to be donated. I made a rule that the only toys he can have are the toys that will fit in this chest. So far, it has been great and he has been very good about only taking one toy out at a time and putting it back when he's done.
Day two of painting I took a little longer to get started, but once I did I didn't stop. I painted the third wall and got started on the fourth and final wall. Before I knew it, I was done. I have painted many rooms in this house and I am still amazed at the effect new paint can have. It just changes a room, I love it.
Not too long after all the walls were dry, my husband came home and I had him move all the old Sesame Street furniture down to the playroom. I was originally going to put it in the basement, but I decided while I was painting that it could be put to good use in the playroom as much-needed extra storage. When he was finished with that, he brought the rug upstairs and got it out of the packaging while I swept up and cleared the floor. We rolled the rug out and once I got it where I wanted it, he moved the bed from the guest room across the hall and I started opening up all the new bedding stuff and made the bed. After the bed was made, the room looked completely different and I was in love.
Currently, I have spent basically all of my time in my son's room because it is just so dang cute and cozy. I've done a bit of decorating here and there and will continue to do so. Ezra absolutely loves his "big boy" room and that he has a bed big enough to cuddle with mommy and daddy in. He also got a smart TV for Christmas from daddy (which was a surprise to me as well), so we have spent lots of time cuddling and watching Netflix together. His room is so much easier to keep clean now and because of the toy chest in his room, he can keep his toys put away without having to see any of it and it doubles as a "treasure chest" to fit the theme so it's a win-win.
This room has been so fun to work on and I was so happy to be able to do this for him as a Christmas gift. It's also been bittersweet converting my toddler to a queen-size bed so his little brother can use his old crib mattress. He is going to be such a good big brother and I can't wait for them to grow up together in our home. ♡
